Demands: What we hope to achieve
1. That the EHRC use their enforcement powers at Oxford University and its constituent colleges to ensure that they are adhering to their specific duties according to the Race Relations Act (amendment 2000)
2. That New College provide evidence of investigating the allegations of racial discrimination made by Gregory Lewis
3. That Oxford University publish all statistics relating to students and staff, separately for each college as well as collectively as a university, according to racial groups, ensuring that there are separate categories for Black African Caribbean, Black African, Black Caribbean and Black British
What you can do to support the campaign:
1. Write to the EHRC asking them to use their enforcement powers at Oxford University colleges. If you have any information about racial discrimination at Oxford or any other university, then include that in your letter and/or mention the racial discrimination experienced by Gregory Lewis at New College, Oxford University.
2. The government is presently in consultation regarding the specific duties of public bodies, including universities, to carry out equality impact assessments and publish the results. They may decide to water down the present duties, giving Black people even less recourse in law, when complaining of racial discrimination. Have your say by filling out the form at http://equalities.gov.uk/news/specific_duties_consultation.aspx, by writing to them at Specific Duties Consultation Responses Government Equalities Office Zone J10, 9th Floor, Eland House, Bressenden Place, London SW1E 5DU or by emailing specificduties@geo.gsi.gov.uk.
All responses must be in by the 10th November 2010. Again you can mention your own experience of racial discrimination within a university or public institution, those of other people and/or that of Gregory Lewis.
3. Write to New College, the other colleges at Oxford University and/or your own college asking for proof that they are adhering to their duties under the Race Relations Act (amendment 2000). Sample letters and excellent guidance is available from the Black Student Campaign at http://www.nus.org.uk/Global/Black%20Students'%20Campaign%20Resources/RRAA_briefing.pdf
