Description: A hospital and medical school at the University of Chicago were envisioned by the university founders.  That plan, initiated with a joint medical program with Rush Medical College, was followed by the development of the world-class University of Chicago Medical Center on campus.  This exhibit looks at the history and evolution of the medical school program, the hospital facilities and their technology, and medical partnerships with other Chicago area hospitals.

Location: The John Crerar Library , Atrium, 5730 South Ellis Avenue, Chicago

Public Hours: Monday – Saturday: 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Ansell will be speaking about his book County: Life, Death and Politics at Chicago's Public Hospital, which was published last year. His book is a memoir of his years at Cook County Hospital and addresses the issue of health disparities in not only Chicago, but also the United States. Currently, Dr. Ansell serves as Chief Medical Officer at Rush University Medical Center.

In researching this book, Dr. Ansell delved into County's past and its longstanding relationship with its next-door neighbor, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center (now named Rush University Medical Center.) His book features photographs and other material from the Cook County Health and Hospital System Archives and the Rush University Medical Center Archives among other sources.

Galter Health Sciences Library Hosts New Exhibit

The Galter Health Sciences Library of Northwestern University is hosting a new temporary exhibit, Photographing Pediatrics: Northwestern University’s Dispensary and Outpatient Clinics 1900 – 1940.  

The exhibit, which runs from June through September 2011, features clinical photographs of pediatrics patients taken for teaching and research purposes at Northwestern University Medical School. The history of Northwestern University’s dispensaries and outpatient clinics, which provided free and low-cost medical care to thousands of Chicagoans for more than a century, is also presented through documents and artifacts from the Galter Health Sciences Library Special Collections and the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Archives. 

Photographing Pediatrics is the result of the collaborative efforts of: Ron Sims, Galter Health Sciences Special Collections Librarian; Paula Summerly, PhD, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Medical Humanities and Bioethics Program, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; and Susan Sacharski, Archivist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

CAMA members are invited to attend an opening reception Friday, June 17th from 4:30 – 6:00 pm in Dollie’s Corner, Second Level, Galter Health Sciences Library, 303 East Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611. Please RSVP by June 15th to p-summerly@northwestern.edu.

American College of Surgeons Hosts New Exhibit

ACS to host "Opening Doors: Contemporary African-American Academic Surgeons"

The American College of Surgeons will be hosting a traveling exhibit from June 13th to July 27th from the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Division on the contributions of African-American academic surgeons. One of several traveling exhibits created by the HMD in its mission to educate the public, this exhibit has been traveling around the country for three years, hosted by various academic medical centers, associations and libraries. The exhibit features many Fellows of the College in its exploration of the history of the contributions of African-American surgeons. 

The exhibit will be open to the public in the lobby of the headquarters of the American College of Surgeons weekdays, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Each of four sections of the exhibit features one surgeon of renown. The rest of the panels contain material on the various topics connected with this history, entitled Pioneers, History, Contemporary Pioneers and New Frontiers. Of the four individuals meriting an entire panel in the exhibit, three are Fellows of the College and two are former presidents: Alexa I. Canady, Claude Organ and LaSalle Leffall. Each of the remaining sections then features many more Fellows of the College and their particular claims to fame, one being ACS President L.D. Britt.

These traveling exhibits are part of the educational outreach mission of the National Library of Medicine designed to enhance public and scholarly awareness and appreciation of its collections.
