A Not-so-new but in Hi-Res Photo of Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina

IMDb has added two not-so-new hi-resolution production stills of Joe Wright's upcoming film Anna Karenina starring Pride & Prejudice stars Keira Knightley (as the title role Anna Karenina | above Photo by Laurie Sparham – © 2012 - Focus Features via IMDb) and Matthew Macfadyen (as Oblonsky, Anna's brother) We've seen these stills before of Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina and Aaron Johnson as Count Vronsky, but they were previously in magazine scans (from UK's Daily Mail and Empire Magazine), which were not in hi-res images until now (which I must say Keira looks even more gorgeous when you click the image to enlarge). I first posted the KK/AK still here: First Look: Keira knightley as Anna Karenina in 'Anna Karenina' film. Still no MM photo as Oblonsky! Hopefully, soon along with the first trailer...

Anna Karenina (which appears to be doing the same theatrical release date strategy as Pride & Prejudice back in 2005, with its UK release date of Sept 16th and US release date of Nov. 11th [limited] and November 23rd [wide]) opens in UK Cinemas on September 7th and two months later in the US (in select theaters) November 9th (and will possibly go in wide release soon after or in the following weeks). Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly MacDonald, Olivia Williams, Emily Watson, Ruth Wilson, Dohmnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Michelle Dockery also star.

Great news! Focus Features has just announced via its official twitter page that Joe Wright's upcoming film Anna Karenina starring Pride & Prejudice stars Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen now has a set US theatrical release date of November 9th, 2012 (a full two months after its UK September 7th release date)!

Yay, finally, a US release date! Bring on MM's first photo as Oblonsky next!  Here's the AK tweet via Focus Features on Twitter. (Also, Box Office Mojo has updated its scheduled release date for AK from Fall 2012 to November 9th!)...

Another new still (via Desktop Nexus) of Keira Knightley (above ^ as Anna Karenina) has emerged online from her upcoming new Joe Wright directed film, Anna Karenina. Keira leads the impressive AK cast with former Pride & Prejudice co-star Matthew Macfadyen, (who will be playing her brother in the film), Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Kelly MacDonald, Olivia Williams, and Michelle Dockery to name some.

Once again, there's still no Matthew photo released (to share here, unfortunately) nor a US theatrical release date for this film has been announced as of yet. Focus Features is taking their sweet time and killing us with a long wait here (esp. for the first MM photo), lol. Come on, they need to focus and get started with the buzz and marketing of this film already...

Speaking of buzz, a few entertainment/film blogs have already started an early Oscar buzz for Keira and the film (knock on wood!) in 2013....

Four HQ production stills for Joe Wright's 'Anna Karenina' starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen

I first posted here last Sunday, the Sneak Peek: New Images of Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina film (from People Magazine). Now, Focus Features has not only released the same first four official stills for Joe Wright's upcoming period drama Anna Karenina starring Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson (The Greatest with Carey Mulligan), Olivia Williams, Emily Watson, Michelle Dockery, Ruth Wilson, Kelly MacDonald, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander. It has also created a website for the movie here and an official facebook page. Once again, still no image(s) of Matthew Macfadyen as Oblonsky has been released, as of yet. Only the main trio, Keira, Jude Law, and Aaron Johnson thus far...As for the film's theater release, in the UK, it'll be released on Sept. 7th, but no US theatrical release date has been announced (yet) either. Hopefully, we'll find out soon as well as a trailer for this film, which I'm very much looking forward to seeing (and some MM stills as Oblonsky, please!). Can't wait!

Sneak Peek: New Images of Keira Knightley in Anna Karenina film

Just got my copy of the latest issue of People Magazine (February 27, 2012) with the late Whitney Houston on the cover. To my surprise, There was a full page of Keira Knightley in her title character Anna Karenina in their scoop section (page 28) where People magazine had a sneak peek of Keira as Anna with a few new images that include co-stars Jude Law as Karenin (Anna's husband) and Aaron Johnson as Vronsky (Anna's lover) with captions. I've scanned the AK section below. Unfortunately, no images of Matthew Macfadyen as Oblonsky (Anna's brother) yet. Hopefully, soon...I'll keep you all posted here as soon as his images from the film is released.

Keira Knightley appeared on ABC's The View this past Tuesday (Jan. 10th) morning to promote her latest film, A Dangerous Method (and had been doing some media interviews currently as well...see/read a few of them below) as its US theatrical release expands throughout this month in more theaters.

A Dangerous Method is currently playing in select theaters here in the US and opens nationwide January 22nd. In the UK Cinemas, it opens Feb. 10th!

Keira Knightley: 'Sometimes I just sit on the bathroom floor and burst into tears'

It's a cold winter morning and Keira Knightley is sitting alone in the library of a central London hotel. She is close to the end of shooting her new film Anna Karenina, in which she stars opposite Aaron Johnson's Vronsky and Jude Law's Karenin. No, she confides, she hasn't shot the suicide sequence in the train station yet. That is a treat waiting in store for the final day of filming, just before Christmas.

Knightley is a disconcerting interviewee. She is very pretty in a sylph-like way. Still only 26, she is friendly, articulate and seemingly unguarded, but quickly makes it clear that there are certain no-go areas where interviewers are forbidden to tread. Miss Jean Brodie-like, she tells you primly that she does not want to discuss her beauty routine or her love life. She doesn't enjoy reading such tittle-tattle herself and insists that she doesn't "owe the public" details of who her boyfriend is. However, ask her anything related to her work and she will answer completely frankly. For the first few minutes of the interview, her arms are folded and her body language is defensive. Once she is in her stride, she relaxes.

It's clear that she'd much rather discuss Tolstoy than Milly Dowler. She's a big fan of War and Peace and used to love Anna Karenina, too, but is beginning to suspect that the Russian novelist had a hidden agenda when it came to his adulterous heroine. "I read the book when I was about 16 and absolutely loved it and thought it was so romantic," Knightley reflects on Anna Karenina. "But I then re-read it to do this [film]... it's interesting coming back to a book when you've read it as a younger person and then seeing it through very different eyes, because I never thought that Tolstoy hated her [Anna Karenina]. And you really think, 'My God, he hates her!'."

Back to what we are allowed to discuss: in playing Anna Karenina, she is following in the steps of two of cinema's greats – Greta Garbo and Vivien Leigh. Will she match up? Knightley parries the question, suggesting that the "beauty shots" are as much the responsibility of cinematographer Seamus McGarvey as they are dependent on her own looks. "He knows how to shoot me."
As for the rest, that (Knightley claims) is simply a matter of "a lot of lighting and a hell of a lot of make-up!".  Read full article here!

 Did you do a lot of research for the role?
I did about four months of reading just about as much as I could. I worked with [screenwriter] Christopher Hampton before -- he wrote the screenplay for "Atonement" -- so as soon as I knew I was going to do the film, I phoned him up and said, "Help!"
He basically handed me a pile of books and said, "Start reading."

You've been filming "Anna Karenina." Have you ever met a corset you didn't like?
(Laughs) Actually I'm not in a corset in that one, fortunately. I think Anna Karenina is one of the classic female roles; you can't exactly turn it down.

But you do tend to do a lot of costume dramas.
I think it's because I tend to like working in Europe and England, not for any other reason than it's close to my home ... The opportunity to play a character like Sabina Spielrein -- I'm not going to turn it down because it's a costume piece. I imagine it's a multitude of factors that have kept me in a corset.

One last thing: Could you have a more gorgeous smile?
Wow! Thanks, I've been told I have a horrible smile. I had a fashion photographer tell me once, "Remember never smile, it doesn't look good on you." It was when I was about 16. Every time I have my picture taken I think, "Oh God, I'm not going to smile. It looks horrendous." So thank you very much.

On similarities between Jude and Michael: "No! No. Jude's a proper actor — he's wonderful to work with. He's a proper actor, I mean they all are . . . Michael works in a much more muscular way. Everything turns into muscle memory. He works a script, and works a script. Jude does a lot of theater so he comes from the preparation side — like a rehearsal room. He's really open to it, and he asks a lot of questions on that day. He's just phenomenal. So no there aren't any similarities, but they're all very good actors."
On bring surprised by the amount of press the DM spanking scene received: "This time in New York, people aren't really talking about it. They are a little bit, but not as much as I thought that they would be. It goes to show how well the film's been received and how fascinating the subject matter is. That is an interesting part of it, and I was interested by it because I didn't understand why people would want to do that or what the vibe is and what she was getting out of it — the fact that the subject itself is so fascinating. What's more shocking about the character is what's going on in her head rather than the spanking scene."
On cracking up while working with Steve Carell: ""He's just lovely. He's such a lovely man. I was quite frightened, because I haven't done comedy before really. I was kind of going, 'It's terrifying, I don't know how to do it, I don't even want to do it!' He was such a sweetheart."
On finishing up Anna Karenina: "I wrapped before Christmas. They've got, I think five more days to go. They're going to Russia for five days. Yeah, it's pretty much in the bag."
On working with Joe Wright for the first time: "We do have a shorthand, but it doesn't get easier. Neither of us are people that are looking for the easy option. We're always looking for something that's going to be more difficult or more challenging. Taking on Anna Karenina is a certainly massive challenge. Partly because it's an 820-page book and you're trying to get it down to, well, a 130-page screenplay."

And while Knightley speaks with an accent she says is "mid-Atlantic, with a Russian blush" in Joe Wright's upcoming "Anna Karenina," she and the rest of the cast -- Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Matthew Macfadyen, Olivia Williams and Emily Watson -- will be using their native English accents for the film. The director had hinted he was going to ditch attempts at a Russian accent last spring, and while purists may be fixated on that point, Knightley teased that it is just a small part of a much bigger vision that will give an "Anna Karenina" unlike anything we've seen before.

"He's got a very different concept than anything that's been done before, I'm only going to say that because I'm pretty sure they're going to start releasing things soon about the concept, so you'll get to see it," the actress said. "I'm not going to try and describe what it is, but it's a much more theatrical version of the piece than has been done before, and I was really excited by that."

First Synopsis for Joe Wright's 'Anna Karenina' starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen (updated)

While former  Pride & Prejudice stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, and director Joe Wright are currently filming their new film, Anna Karenina, unfortunately, no on set photos (even papz) available anywhere, no theatrical release date (other than sometime later in the second half of 2012), or no other important updates from filming and on the set gossip with our trio has surfaced online as of yet. However, Focus Features (Pride & Prejudice and Atonement), who is distributing it domestically, just released the synopsis (via Collider) for Anna Karenina along with another new Keira Knightley film, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.

Updated 12/30/11: Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery (a frequent co-star of P&P 05 actors) just mention in a new Collider "Downton Abbey" interview/article that she's indeed cast in Anna Karenina (no mentioned of what character she's playing though) and here's the part where she mentioned it as well as the movies and miniseries that she had previously worked with P&P actors and director Joe Wright (FYI: she was in Return to Cranford with Judi Dench and Claudie Blakley, Hanna with Tom Hollander and director Joe Wright, Downton Abbey with Penelope Wilton, and now Anna Karenina with Keira, Matthew, and Joe Wright)...

DOCKERY: Yes, I’d love too. I really would love too. I love America and I hope that the success of Downton Abbey may open some doors for us. I’m actually not available at the moment because I’m doing a part in a Joe Wright film. He’s doing an adaptation of Anna Karenina, which is another period piece. Here's an update of Anna Karenina's confirmed cast (as listed above)...and now includes Ruth Wilson and Emily Watson. In addition, Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery (who had a cameo on JW's recent Hanna film) is said  (and is listed on IMDB) to be playing Princess Betsy, but Working Title Films (who is producing this film, had previously listed Andrea Riseborough as playing Princess Betsy,  but it seems she's no longer in the cast) now has updated/listed Ruth Wilson playing Princess Betsy. Confusing much? lol...we shall see when we hear more info about their characters and their confirmation soon.  For now, I'll go with Ruth Wilson as Princess Betsy as listed on Working Title's website (as IMDB is often edited out like Wikipedia...though someone said at the AK IMDB board that she's playing Princess Betsy Tverskaya as revealed by herself in The London Evening Standard...so, who knows? and Michelle Dockery herself confirmed it in a new Collider interview here!)

Focus Features announced today that Joe Wright's Anna Karenina, starring Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Johnson, will start shooting in the U.K. and Russia this month:

Joe Wright will direct the epic romance Anna Karenina, adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love). The Working Title Films production will commence filming in the U.K. and Russia this month. Focus Features will distribute the movie domestically, and Universal Pictures International (UPI) will distribute the movie internationally, in the second half of 2012.

Keira Knightley, Academy Award-nominated for Pride & Prejudice, will star as Anna Karenina in her third collaboration with Mr. Wright. Ms. Knightley will be starring opposite two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law, as Anna’s husband Aleksei Karenin; and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy), as Count Vronsky. Rounding out the cast will be Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire), Matthew Macfadyen (Pride & Prejudice), Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Alicia Vikander (The Seventh Son), two-time Academy Award nominee Emily Watson, Olivia Williams (Hanna), and Ruth Wilson (Luther).

Also reteaming with Mr. Wright on Anna Karenina are Academy Award-winning composer Dario Marianelli, twice-Academy Award-nominated costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and three-time Academy Award-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood. The cinematographer will be Academy Award winner Philippe Rousselot. Melanie Ann Oliver (Focus’ Jane Eyre) will edit the feature. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will be the choreographer on the movie.

The story unfolds in its original late-19th-century Russia high-society setting and powerfully explores the capacity for love that surges through the human heart, from the passion between adulterers to the bond between a mother and her children. As Anna (Ms. Knightley) questions her happiness, change comes to her family, friends, and community.

It’s official: Atonement director Joe Wright and star Keira Knightley are reteaming for Anna Karenina, the Working Title films adaptation of Leo Tolstoy’s novel that was written by Tom Stoppard. The film will be distributed by Focus Features in the U.S. and Universal Pictures International worldwide sometime in the second half of 2012. Working Title co-chairs Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing with Paul Webster; the trio were 2008 Oscar nominees as producers of Atonement.

Knightley will star as Anna, Jude Law will play her husband Aleksei Karenin, and Aaron Johnson (Nowhere Boy) will play Count Vronsky. Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, Emily Watson, Olivia Williams and Ruth Wilson also have been cast in the story of a woman making her way in early-19th-century Russian high society. It’s familiar territory for Wright, who directed the period adaptations Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, also for Working Title and Focus; he also directed The Soloist for Working Title and UPI and most recently Hanna for Focus.

Focus Features will distribute the Joe Wright-directed adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic Anna Karenina in the United States in the second half of 2012. Universal Pictures International will distribute the movie internationally.

The Pillars of the Earth Miniseries Coming to ReelzChannel
The Emmy-nominated The Pillars of the Earth will air on ReelzChannel starting Sunday, December 4. Based on Ken Follet's best selling novel, the nine-part miniseries is a sweeping epic set in 12th-century England that features stellar performances from Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, and Donald Sutherland.
Follet's sensuous story — set against a backdrop of war, religious strife, and power struggles — was an Oprah Book Club selection and has sold nearly 19 million copies worldwide. Three-time DGA award-winner Sergio Mimica-Gezzan directed the miniseries. Matthew Macfadyen, Hayley Atwell, Sam Clafin, and Eddie Redmayne also star.

Pillars is getting the old-school miniseries treatment, with episodes airing on consecutive days. ReelzChannel is Dish 299, DirecTV 238, and available on your cable system.
