Happy Birthday Brenda Blethyn!

Today is the 66th birthday of two-time Academy Award Award Nominee Brenda Blethyn, best known to us P&P fans as Mrs. Bennet, the Bennet girls' mother in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice film.

After twenty years of hard work on stage and both television and films, there are not many other actresses who deserved the success, recognition and stardom which Brenda Blethyn has now achieved.

Born in (February 20th) 1946 in Ramsgate in Kent, England, she started her career at British Rail in the 1960s. Saving money during her time there, she took a risk and enrolled herself at the at The Guildford School of Acting in Guildford, Surrey, England and then left her British Rail years behind. Her risk had paid off, by the mid-1970s she was working on stage, eventually joining the National Theatre Company in 1975. (Read more of her Bio on IMDB!)

Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Bennet
in Pride & Prejudice
“When I told people I was playing this part they’d say ‘oh she’s a wonderful cartoon character, you’ll have great fun’.
I said ‘excuse me, no she’s not. She’s got a problem to be dealt with and it seems to me that she’s the only one taking the problem seriously’. The father isn’t, the daughters don’t seem terribly concerned, and I would say that it’s okay for the father because he’s got a roof over his head all the time he’s alive, it’s when he goes that the problem sets in. She mentions that in one of the scenes.” (Brenda Blethyn)
“It’s a tricky part, as she can be very annoying; you want to stop her chattering and shrieking. But Brenda has the humor and the heart to show the amount of love and care Mrs. Bennet has for her daughters”. (Joe Wright)

"We were like one big family. We took over the house. It was so much fun. Brenda Blethyn (Mrs Bennett) mummied us all - when we had days off she took us on day trips to a llama farm." (Carey Mulligan)
I´ve loved every minute of this film. We´ve become such friends. All of us. It´s been so happy, kind of idyllic, in that house, and the friendships and the camaraderie, it´s just heaven, and I don´t want it to end, to be honest”. (Brenda Blethyn)

But first, the 84th Academy Awards will be presented by Billy Crystal on February 26th on ABC.

Must-See Movies 2012 starring Austen Actors

All these Austen Actors (from various and  6 different Austen adapted TV and films: Pride & Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey as well as other Austen inspired films: Becoming Jane, The Jane Austen Book Club, Lost In Austen, From Prada to Nada, etc.) all have new movies coming out this year. Usually, I would just post about the Must-See TV & films starring P&P (2005) Actors (as after all, this blog is all about them and the P&P movie I love so much) but I like most of these other Austen Actors (ie. Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, James McAvoy, Kate Winslet, Hugh Dancy, etc.) too. They are Austen related after all, and  being a big movie aficionado that I am, I couldn't help but notice that a lot of Austen Actors are in so many new films coming out this year (even in the past and previous years). I always see trailers and TV spots whenever I watch a movie in theaters or on TV and online, and there's always at least one (or two) Austen actor starring or co-starring in a film or television show. So, I thought I'd (try to) compile here a list of AA actors with new films or TV Movies/mini-series that they're starring/co-starring that are coming out this year.

Here's a very long list starting with films (starring/co-starring our favorite Austen Actors) currently showing in theaters now (for instance, a well-known Austen actor co-stars in the current #1 film at the box-office in America, Contraband with Mark Wahlberg and has a new movie, Underworld: Awakening (Updated 1/22/12: Weekend Box Office – UNDERWORLD AWAKENING Leads with $25.4 Million via Collider) opening in theaters today as well...) to films coming out soon and are scheduled to be released every month of this year (except for October...though release dates are subject to change).

    Happy 236th Birthday Jane Austen!

Re-posting this here (slightly edited), from my similar post in 2009 (since I can't top, think of anything new or better to write than what I wrote two years ago, lol) for this very special occasion, a birthday tribute post to the lovely, genius and way ahead of her time, beloved English novelist, the one and only Jane Austen.

Remembering and celebrating her birthday today, Jane Austen, the woman who wrote the original Pride and Prejudice novel (which had been made into several TV and Film adaptations including the 2005 film, Pride & Prejudice), which was her first (can you believe unsuccessful?!) submission to a publisher back in 1797 (214 years ago) titled "First Impressions" (later changed to "Pride and Prejudice"). She revised "First Impressions" and published it entitled "Pride and Prejudice" in 1813 (198 years ago!).

Jane Austen was born on this day back on December 16th, 1775 (she would've been 236 years old!!! today...) to the local rector, Rev. George Austen (1731-1805), and Cassandra Leigh (1739-1827). She was the 7th child amongst 8 children. She had one older sister, Cassandra.

Her only six published novels (Pride and Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey) were all popular (esp. Pride and Prejudice, of course) and made into several TV and film adaptations for over 72 years (since 1938) to this day.

    HAPPY 236th BIRTHDAY
    JANE AUSTEN!!!

Without her, P&P wouldn't have existed (nor this blog)...we wouldn't have read P&P novel or seen various TV and film adaptations including the Oscar nominated 2005 film version, which is my absolute (and all-time) favorite film adaptation based on this classic novel. So, yeah, JA rocks (and so ahead of her time) deserves to be recognized and remembered today on her birthday.

Here are some interesting Jane Austen trivia (via JA's profile on imdb.com)...

    Jane Austen Trivia

    • Her books have never been out of print since they were first published.
    • Between 1900 and 1975, there were more than 60 radio, television and stage productions of Austen novels. The first film adaptation was in 1940.

    • Anne Hathaway portrayed her in Becoming Jane (2007).

In Theaters Today Six Years Ago: Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen

Six Years ago today (November 23, 2005), during the Thanksgiving week here in the U.S., the 6-time BAFTA (including a WIN for director Joe Wright, which he won the Carl Foreman Award for the Most Promising Newcomer and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Brenda Blethyn), 2-time Golden Globes (including Best Actress nomination for Keira Knightley), and 4-time Oscar nominated film (including Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination for Keira Knightley) Pride & Prejudice starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen expanded its release in U.S. theaters nationwide release (after its select cities debut early November 11th, which it debuted at #10 in limited release of 215 screens in a few select cities) with a strong $2.8+ million on its first opening weekend, and according to Box Office Mojo (with an average of $13,325). Its production budget was reportedly $28 million (estimated). Twelve days later, on this day, the 23rd of November, it expanded to a nationwide US theatrical release with an even more impressive $7,158,119 (#7, rank, 1, 299 theaters, $5,510 average). Its UK Cinema release anniversary was two months ago (September 16th), where it debuted at #1 with £2,529,947 (on 397 screens). With a $38.4 million domestic gross (and $82.7 million in foreign gross making its worldwide total of $121,147, 947), it spent a 112 days/16 weeks of theatrical release here in the U.S. Read more figures and stats here for P&P movie!

To celebrate its 6th year anniversary (US November wide release) of this unforgettable and amazing film here at the P&P Blog, I thought I'd make this post (again for the 3rd time, but edited for the US wide release anniversary) all about it here today, as this is worth reposting here (multiple times) to look back on this amazing and brilliant film and its continued successes, 6 years later and for many years to come.

Also, I am reposting here all the P&P related links (I have posted previously since I started blogging about P&P movie over 3 years ago...) for you to check out (if you haven't already done so).

But first, check out the following...

When Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) meets the handsome Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), she believes he is the last man on earth she could marry. But as their lives become intertwined in an unexpected adventure, she finds herself captivated by the very person she swore to loathe for all eternity. Based on the beloved masterpiece by Jane Austen, it is the classic tale of love and misunderstanding that sparkles with romance, wit and emotional force. Critics are calling it "Exhilarating. A joy from start to finish." (Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times)

    Other P&P Actors: Must-See TV & Films 2011/2012

You might not remember the names of these other supporting Pride & Prejudice actors, but you probably remember their faces when you see them on-screen or keep thinking to yourself, he or she looks familiar, where have I seen him/her before? Of course, if you're really curious, you will google or check out IMDB for the cast credits to see which movie you've seen them before. I've done that a lot when I see a movie (old or new) and often found a lot of these other P&P actors (even the main supporting P&P actors have been seen in other films that I didn't recognize or remember seeing them until I checked their IMDB filmography). These other P&P actors have done more TV and film work post-P&P and a few of them have appeared in some very recognizable and well-known films recently. I've compiled and listed them below. You'll be surprised to know that they've also appeared in some films the main P&P actors have appeared as well. Recent films (albeit in small or cameo roles) like Jane Eyre (2011), Johnny English Reborn and My Week with Marilyn to name a few and other TV and films like Atonement, Robin Hood (2010), Little Dorrit, Doctor Who, Larkrise to Candleford, Persuasion (2007), and  Spooks/MI-5. Others even appeared in familiar film titles in the past like The Holiday, Babel, Love Actually, and Gosford Park to name a few. Plus a new TV miniseries that recent multiple award winner, Downtown Abbey creator and writer Jullian Fellows is working on, Titanic (2012) and Steven Spielberg's new film War Horse. Scroll all the way down below to see/read which two P&P actors are both appearing in this week's limited release of My Week With Marilyn with Michelle Williams and Judi Dench and individually in the upcoming Titanic (2012) miniseries and Spielberg's War Horse film, which will be released on Christmas Day.

See the main (and supporting) P&P cast's Must-See Films for 2011 for P&P Actors as I've previously posted last January.

By the way, one of these other actors is slightly more familiar than the others as she had played one of the main P&P characters' little sister (so she's easily recognized and remembered than the others) and she had previously appeared/co-starred in a few recent well-known TV series and film like Showtimes' The Tudors (with Jonathan Rhys-Meyer and Henry Cavill) and the new Jane Eyre (with Judi Dench and Michael Fassbender). I've even posted about her here more than a few times, of course. Still, she's still not quite well-known as her other P&P co-stars in the main supporting cast (ie. Carey Mulligan and Talulah Riley). So, I thought I'd include her here and refresh your memory of her. You may remember and have seen...
