A happy 54th birthday to Holly Hunter (We just wished her Broadcast co-star William Hurt happy birthday earlier.) Is it strange that I was a huge fan of Broadcast News when I was a little kid? I have vivid memories of watching this movie many many times. I don't know how that happened - I can't imagine my parents liked it, it's not their type of movie. But it was totally these neurotic Jane type characters that appealed to me as a little one - I foresaw my spazztastic future, I guess. Anyway I'm super excited that Holly's returning to movie screens this year, and with Diablo Cody no less! I have missed her horribly. I just can't do that show she's on.

(inspired by this) The undersung heroes of Reality Bites! The way that Janeane delivers that "Oh Christ" still makes me laugh so hard tears spill down my face til this day. And then after that how she says "Oh pah-flag. I'm beginning to like the sound of that!"

And Steve Zahn is just adorable, so you can count this as the moment I fell for him too. (Let us forget how horribly depressing all this gets in like thirty seconds.) And then he went and did naked yoga (that's one of MNPP's most popular posts) and walked around naked with a naked Paul Walker and cemented my affection for eternity.

Happy 24, Markéta! I've been thinking I need to go back and watch Once again - there have been ads for the Broadway version all over the place lately, reminding me it's been a couple of years since I watched the film. I love the film. I'm probably too cheap to ever go see it on Broadway, but without Glenn and Markéta I don't especially see much point - it was their sweet low-key chemistry that won me over more than anything. Okay I love the soundtrack too, but I can watch the movie for free and I am cheap, so that's that. Sorry, Broadway! And double sorry to the-hot-guy-playing-the-Glenn-part named Steve Kazee.

Hey that the exact same moment I fell for John Hawkes, what a coincidence!  This scene is just such an incredible little thing. Anyway happy 38, Miranda! I love her unabashedly, she blows me away with everything she does. Seeing her perform bits from her most recent book in person last Fall was one of the best experiences this city's given me. She's amazing.

Happy 45th birthday to Laura Dern! I was looking through my old Laura Dern posts this morning and just a couple of weeks ago for David Lynch's birthday I'd asked which Lynchian Dern character was hotter, and I already listed a list of my favorite performances of hers for her birthday back in 2009, and I've given loads of love to The Face a million times over, and on and on - she's always been one of my favorite actresses. Very nearly literally always - I remember watching  the Joyce Carol Oates "Hormones will kill you!' adaptation Smooth Talk in school and it was instantaneous, this affection for her. I need to go back and rewatch  Smooth Talk, it's been a very long time (plus all that vintage Treat Wiliams, mmm). It was the very next year she hooked up with David Lynch for Blue Velvet (although I wouldn't see that movie until much later), and then come 1993 came Jurassic Park and there was no looking back. And now she's getting some of the kudos she has long long deserved with Mike White's brilliant Enlightened, and the world in this respect feels right. Point being, I would so sit on the side of the road with a cow for her.

The Moment I Fell For... Greta Gerwig

I've got director Ti West on the brain today due to all the buzz from Sundance on his new anthology movie V/H/S, hence this (which I can't believe I never wrote up before anyway). I'd seen Greta in the movie Baghead, which she's also wonderful in, before seeing her in this, but it was this role here in The House of the Devil that got me hooked. In my review way back when I rhapsodized on an earlier scene in the film where Greta and Jocelyn Donahue eat some pizza and chat like besties, which is a great scene and is, to me, one of the lynchpins for why this movie works so well - we come to really like these two girls, and don't want anything bad to happen to them - but it's this slightly later moment with Gerwig alone that sealed my eternal adoration of her. They've gotten to the spooky old house and she's been left alone while Donahue gets a tour, and all she does is try a piece of old candy that's in a dish across from the sofa, but it's all so natural and charming and funny, her grossed-out reaction, that my heart fluttered with affection, never to turn back.
