Dancy With The Devil

.

Deadline's reporting that Hugh Dancy my beloved Hugh Dancy is going to star as Will Graham, aka the guy who will hunt Hannibal Lecter down, in Bryan Fuller's show about just that on NBC, called Hannibal. Can you say AWESOME? I mean that, can you say "awesome" for me, I have swooned and am totally unconscious.

For serious though, I've read the script for this show's pilot and it's so so so good you guys, so scary and filled with deliciousness, and Hugh is a terrific choice for the immensely complicated character that is Will. This is going to rule so very hard I can't even take it.

Eddie the Munster

.
Via Deadline comes word that Eddie Izzard has been cast as "Grandpa" in Bryan Fuller's Munsters reboot called Mockingbird Lane. Here's what they say on the character as envisioned by Fuller:

"Izzard will play Grandpa, the Munster family patriarch, a powerful, ancient vampire with an irrepressible twinkle in his eye. He can shapeshift into rats, wolves, and other creatures at will, but he’s also dapper and charming in a fedora; he is a Don Juan-type womanizer with penchant for flashy, sexy outfits. "

It's so weird to actually have advanced knowledge of something for once and yet to not really be able to talk about it, alas, but let me just say that I've actually gotten to see all sorts of production art for Mockingbird and lemme tell you what it is looking so good, you guys. I could go on and on about the costumes but you'll see. You will see! And the sets! Dudes, Bryan & Co. are really making this something special, I can't wait until everything comes together. Very excited!

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Aaron: She lives in a trailer park.
Clearly she's disturbed. I mean, clearly.

The first episode of Wonderfalls, the series that renders the phrase "too short-lived" meaningless, aired eight years ago tonight. In a perfect world we'd be right smack-dab in the middle of the 8th season right now - where do you think Jaye would be? I think that by now she would have attained nirvana and led an army of cow-creamers and Buffalo Muffins into an epic battle across the savage plains of southern Canada. Or maybe at least she'd have gotten a better job.

The last time I wrote about this I was too wussy to title the post this, so I decided to just go for it this time.  What an adventure it's been! Anyway today there is good news for those of us who found the word earlier this week that Bryan Fuller's Munsters reboot called Mockingbird Lane was getting held back by NBC until next year for some fine-tuning to be like one of those monstrously cruel mirages cartoon people see in the desert, turning their wine and grapes into sand - we're thirsty, Bryan! So thirsty. We have waited so long. But we can now turn those grapes and wine back into grapes and wine, and drink and be merry, for good news, very good, is here via EW on Fuller's other project:

"Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal project just got a direct-to-series order. NBC has picked up 13 episodes of the thriller TV series based on Thomas Harris’ classic cannibal serial killer.

Logline: “One-hour contemporary thriller series featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship.”

So that includes some new information. Fuller is focusing on damaged FBI profiler Graham instead of Clarice Starling (popularized by Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs). Graham is the agent who captured Lecter when the psychiatrist was on his killing/eating spree.

The first question is who will play Lecter — a part that one could argue is either a dream role, or a thankless gig considering the inevitable comparisons to Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar-winning take on the character. Another question: How much will NBC push the envelope with the original tale’s gory content?"

I think it's smart to avoid a Clarice Starling character since it changes up the dynamic Lambs dazzled us with, and anyway they've got their hands full already casting an actor to play Hannibal. And while anyone with sense adores Manhunter, I wouldn't say that William Peterson owns the idea of a "Will Graham" quite like Foster and Hopkins do their iconic statue-gobbling roles. (And I can't even remember what Ed Norton did Graham in Red Dragon.) But gah, who will they get for Lecter?!? That is the big question. And with a direct-to-series order, shit's gonna get rolling on this soon. Hooray! Who's ready for a bit of the ol' ultra-violence? Oh wait wrong movie. But still, that.

And it seems silly to me to worry about what NBC will let get by violence-wise - doesn't network television show despicable acts of horrendous nature on stuff like those CSI shows every night of the week? I mean Marg Helgenberger's face alone is worse than any explicitly rendered cannibalism I can even imagine.

I Am Link

.
--- From The Dead - The actor Lou Taylor Pucci has been cast in the Evil Dead remake says BD, who points out - what the hell happened to this guy? He was poised for big things a couple of years ago it seemed like and then he just seemed to vanish. Anyway, he's back, and in this, apparently.

--- Lincoln Logged - The first footage from Abraham Lincoln Vampire Killer showed up online over the weekend, and it's much bigger looking than I was anticipating. Then again I don't really know what I was anticipating, but I guess I mean it seems to have had some real budget. Those are actual special effects I'm seeing!

--- The Munster Move - Bryan Fuller's take on The Munsters, now called Mockingbird Lane, has been delayed from the upcoming pilot season, possibly for mid-season replacement or Summer, because NBC wants to take their time getting the show right. Let's hope that means "Let Bryan Fuller do his thing without interference, because he is awesome."

---  Three Times A Lady - The Playlist has news on Isabelle Huppert's next movie - it's with the Korean director Hong Sang-soo called In Another Country, and it sounds really interesting. She'll be playing three different characters all with the same name in the same location and interacting with the same people. If anybody could make that absolutely riveting, it's Izzy. I should add that it co-stars Yu Jun-Sang, seen there to the right, and he is handsome.

--- Hammer Headed - I saw The Woman In Black yesterday, I'll have more to say about that later I think, but for now let's just say I am very happy to have Hammer Films back in the world. DH has some quotes from the studio's president about how they might be rebooting a couple of their most familiar properties, Dracula and Quartermass. Yes, please. I would also like a lesbian vampire movie, while you're at it. Those things are a blast.

--- I Know You Are - I haven't read this yet but here's a long interview with Paul Reubens about the future of Pee Wee Herman over at AICN.

I Am Link

.
--- He's A Maniac - Every couple of days my mind drifts to the Alexandre Aja directed remake of the sleaze-filled 1980 slasher Maniac starring Elijah Wood and I'm all, "Wha?" So I read this piffle of an interview with one of the actresses in the film with curiosity. She's all, "I've never seen the original, but this is totally different!" and she says that Aja made all of her favorite horror movies of all time (???), so whatever, but still. Wha?

--- Southern Cabin - AICN runs through the films that are showing at this year's SXSW festival, which apparently includes Joss Whedon scripted Drew Goddard directed long long awaited The Cabin in the Woods, sigh, I want it. AICN has seen it already and says:

"I feel very confident that this will be talked about for most of the year, especially when they see some of the wild imagery that Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon have cooked up. One sequence - I won't spoil, but involves a bunch of elevators - made me want to stand up and applaud. It's a hell of a horror movie, and it's so much fun."

Sigh, I want it.

--- Sad News, Kate Winslet isn't going to be in Charlie Kaufman's movie Frank or Francis after all, boo. I missed that tidbit when they announced Paul Reubens (and Elizabeth Banks) were going to be in it, I guess. I just blocked it out, because it sucks!

--- Speaking of Charlie Kaufman things, Spike Jonze is working on a movie that isn't the Charlie Kaufman movie we thought he was making, says Slash. Jonze is gathering together a (awesome awesome) cast including Amy Adams, Joaquin Phoenix, Samantha Morton, and Carey Mulligan for a movie about a man that falls in love with a computer voice. What's confusing is that script of Charlie Kaufman's that Spike is also attached to doing is also supposed to star Mulligan and Phoenix. Maybe he will just make both movies simultaneously! It's been too long since I've had a Spike Jonze Joint in my life, having two would rule.

--- Thirteen Thirteen - Bryan Fuller's reboot of The Munsters is not going to be called The Munsters, but rather it will be called Mockingbird Lane, after their memorable address of 1313 et cetera. According to TV Line they are in the casting stage right now.

--- Silent Dom - We told you about Motor City awhile back - it's that thriller that will star Dominic Cooper in which he is only supposed to have a single line of dialogue the whole running time. Well Oscar Nominee Gary Oldman (how nice to be able to say that) has just joined the thing as the bad guy. He makes a good bad guy!

--- Patience Is A Virtue, and I guess I am virtueless - I posted some shitty-quality screencaps from a clip of a trailer on Entertainment Tonight for The Hunger Games earlier, but I should have just waited because now the whole trailer's released in great quality over at Yahoo. I'm waiting until I get home tonight and can watch it properly to, uh, watch it properly.
