TGT11: 5 Off My Head - Tube Gratuities

Because I haven't made enough work for myself today covering my favorite male nakedness in the movies (not to even mention the other four days of endless excess we've already seen), I felt I really had to give a shout-out to the efforts of their small-screen counterparts this year since TV has become a true hot-bed of beefcakery. I'm not going to list all I could because honestly inside my brain right now is the part where James Brown collapses on stage and they wrap the cape around him, sweat flopping onto the front row, seriously. But I had to give a little bit of love in this direction, because damn! Good stuff. So here's the first five I thought of.



Charlie Cox on Boardwalk Empire - He gets bonus points for making out with Thomas on Downton Abbey, but he doesn't really need the bonus because oh my god I love furry little Charlie so much. See more here and here.

Thomas Jane, Hung - He sent the show off with a bang, i.e. a reveal of a dick so large they couldn't even fit the whole thing in frame. See everything over here and here and here. And bless him for this.

Joe Manganiello, True Blood - All the menfolk give it their all on True Blood but I'm giving Joe the attention this year, because he gave us a good look at that were-rump and yet somehow that scene of him wiggling into jeans was even more eye-popping.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Man Vs. Wild - Hey I didn't get to include him otherwise (he kept it all on in Source Code, the bastard person) and a celebration of gratuity without Jake is no celebration at all. See a bunch here.

Jason Momoa, A Game of Thrones - Another cast full of hot pieces we appreciate (Hey there, lil' Alfie Allen) but Khal Drogo wins the crown this year. Let's hope that Richard Madden and Kit Harington and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau bring it this next season. See more here. 

(And here's where I admit I just realized I forgot to include Momoa's Conan the Barbarian on the list of movie gratuities this year - I told you there'd be ones I forgot! See some shots from that movie here and here. Twas super foolish of me to forget this one. He might have even placed in the top 20 had I remembered him. Sorry, Jason!)

You can read his piece on the first season here, and his brand new piece on the second season here. From that second link comes this brilliance in the form of an aside:

"Any time I really look at Maggie Smith’s eyes, I think to myself that she’s got a truly great villain role in her somewhere, if the right part comes along. I mean a David Lynch-type villain, a villain who radiates menace. The Dowager Countess is a pussycat compared to what’s potentially in there."

Why don't we live in a world where this is happening? Make this happen! Even if it's Harry Potter 9: The Vengeance of McGonagall.

--- RoboSwede - We've been threatening to do a proper gratuitous post for the Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman for nearly a year, since last April when he was cast in the Ryan Reynolds movie Safe House which just came out a couple of weeks ago. (Did it flop? I don't think I know anyone who saw it, but then, I wouldn't.) Then he was going to star opposite A Game of Thrones' Kit Harington in a movie about King Arthur and Sir Lancelot, and he drove me to one of the worst puns I've ever made. (At least I knew it was bad at the time, right? Right?) Well now Kinnaman's been offered the lead in the Robocop remake and my prescience about him no longer seems so precious. He is the world's now. 

--- D'oh Face - Behold one of the greatest visual every given to the internet: Rich at fourfour's gif-wall of Oscar losers. I can hardly even take in its scope. It is staggeringly awesome.

--- As usual, reading what my bud Sean has to say on a topic I'm familiar with - in this case, his take on the first season of Downton Abbey - is sheer joy. 

--- Space Jockies - I guess JJ Abrams is shooting Star Trek 2 right now and Slash rounded up some pictures and what-nots from the set including a hysterical in-action shot of Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch fighting. I guess Benedict must have been cast in this before I'd watched Sherlock because if I'd have watched Sherlock at that time I would surely have taken note of his casting. Well at least now that I have seen Sherlock I am very enthusastic about this. Which reminds me, I know I tweeted this same sentiment before, but let me just say here that all of you people who encouraged me to watch Sherlock are total jerks, because now I am dying for more, and there is no more yet, so I am just dying. Thanks, jerks! (Seriously though, thanks.)

--- All The Best - Joe Reid's been plugging along with his Low Res Movie Awards all week and it's so stuffed to the gills with epic goodness I can hardly stand it. I can't stand it! That is, in a good way, obviously. Seriously, though. Seriously.

--- Toga Toga - In obvious casting news, Dwayne Johnson is set to play Hercules in a new movie. Let's hope they just go dig up all of Steve Reeves old costumes for him, because otherwise what the hell would be the point?

--- Damned If You Don't - Back when Stacie announced this month's Final Girl Film Club pick I wondered if I'd ever seen Hell Night - well after reading a couple of the posts that popped up yesterday I can safely say nope I have never seen Hell Night. I should have found this out before FGFC actually happened so I could have written something up, but I'm always too dumb to keep up. Always. It's a rule, and stuff!

Shirley MacLaine Believes In Psychics, Right?

I know she believes in that past life stuff at least, so let's just assume she believes in psychics too, which is a coincidence you see, because I am totally fucking psychic! A couple of weeks ago I joked on Twitter that Downton Abbey's explosive success was going to make it the hot spot for guest stars like a Merchant Ivory version of The Love Boat. I was completely kidding - it didn't seem like a likely thing at all. It's absurd, right? Cue the first domino:

"Shirley MacLaine ("Terms of Endearment") is joining the third season of Masterpiece Theatre's 'Downton Abbey,' which starts filming next month. She'll be playing the American mother of Lady Grantham (Elizabeth McGovern)."

Read more here. Next stop Charo! (Okay okay Shirley MacLaine is a super actress and I love her and she's by no means on a Charo level and I can't wait to see her on the show. But still. It always starts out well-meaning, the guests showing up, and then by Season 5 you've got Gilbert Godfried spritizing soda water in Maggie Smith's face.)

Downton Abbey wins Best Mini-Series Award at 2012 Golden Globe Awards!

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards is on tonight (which just ended about 17 min. ago, actually...and on time too!) on NBC! Downton Abbey scored 4 Golden Globe Awards Nominations!

At the same time at around 9 PM ET, on a different channel (over an hour ago), Downton Abbey's ( co-stars) Season 2, Episode 2 just aired on PBS Masterpiece Classic. 

Downton Abbey won only one of its 4 nominations, which is the following category below...

Here are a few press room  photos of Downton Abbey's award winning creator/writer Julian Fellowes holding his show's Golden Globe award along with two of his actors/main cast, Golden Globe Nominees Elizabeth McGovern (Cora, Countess of Grantham) and Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham). Unfortunately, neither one (McGovern and Bonneville) won for their Best Actress and Actor nominations tonight. Maggie Smith lost her Best Supporting Actress nominations too.
